The Cold War Returns

The Cold War never actually ended, for the same reason it was never declared. Called that way because it is not fought in open war campaigns between the two great powers, Russia and United States; it is more like a competition to see who dominates the world. Both contenders overlook that in the meantime another great power has emerged, China. And as if it weren’t enough, a new uncontrolled force arises, the so-called Islamic State. This is no longer a game of chess, rather a game of poker.

The theater of operations is now the old territory in which Western civilization was born, paradoxically: the Middle East. In it was once placed Abraham, the father, the appearance of the wheel and the alphabet. Now it holds two artificial and failed States: Iraq and Syria. Their respective populations live frightened, expecting the impossible exodus to Europe.

Syria is the best chance Russia has to lean into the Mediterranean, an old dream. It is the natural access to Iraq’s oil. The Islamic State is really the most powerful terrorist organization in History. It counts with a conclusive weapon: the suicide attack.

All the armies meet in the “Agramante’s field” of Syria: (1) those whom backed by Russia, defend Syria’s dictator Al-Assad, (2) those, aided by the United States and its allies, whom attempt to bring down the dictator. (3) Those of the State of Iraq, under the shadow of the United States. (4) The groups of Kurds against the various States that oppress them. (5) The terrorists of the Islamic State against all. The conflict could not be more convoluted.

The only solution would be that the United States and Russia collaborate to behead the Islamic State. But they are hell-bent on the Cold War.
