When after September 11, 2011 Al Qaeda and Jihadist networks announced that that they had declared war on Western countries, few in Europe took the hint.

After all, Europeans loathe wars, believing they are part of the past and that waging them are specific to unsubtle and unrefined countries. So Europe did two things: let the United States lead the war on terrorism, and tackle Jihadism exclusively as a matter of police and intelligence, of national security.

During the time the Navy kicked the Middles East in persecution of Al Qaeda, restraining Iran and guaranteeing the region’s stability, the European strategy seemed to work, with only sporadic attacks. But Obama’s retreat was enough for the demon of ISIS to let loose, and the illusion was broken. Today Jihadism not only stretches from Indonesia to Nigeria, Somalia or Afghanistan: it is now capable of successfully committing paramilitary attacks in the very cities of Europe.

Better we not raise any false hope: Jihadism is in conditions of execution complex, coordinated and simultaneous operations at the heart of our cities. It has sufficient financial means, human resources inside and outside our cities, and a doctrine of success. As George Bush assured in 2001, if we do not fight them, we will have to fight them in our streets. Paris cruelly discovered that the prediction was true. Lets hope that as soon possible Europeans, who are behind 14 years, understand they are at war, and that no one will wage it for them.
