Human Rights Watch asks Afghanistan to end indefinite detentions without trial

Human Rights Watch has started a campaign to prevent Afghanistan to go ahead with this law. “Given President Ashraf Ghani’s sharp criticisms of United States practices at Guantanamo, it is incomprehensible why he would want to bring indefinite detention without trial to Afghanistan, “ claims the organization. HRW asks to take other anti-terrorist measures without denying “fair trials.”

Last September a presidential decree allowed the country to detain suspects of “crimes against internal or external security” without trail for a renewable one-year period. The parliament must now decide to revert the measure or turn it into a law.
