Wave of violence strikes Guerrero, Mexico
Astudillo’s promise to bring “peace and order” has not been fulfilled in the state of Guerrero: “The new governor has not been able to establish a sense of political authority,” claimed a security expert. Residents, united in a neighborhood watch, fight criminals on the streets everyday. Only the presence of the military in areas such as Acapulco, have been able to control the surge of violence.
Since the kidnapping and murder of 43 students last year, violence continues to grow. After Astudillo took office as the new governor in October, things have not improved: there have been 50 murders to the date.
