Gambia bans female genital mutilation
Jammeh pointed out that for the past 21 years he has seen women die from fistulas, cervical cancer and labor due to genital mutilation. The president warned that from now on there would be consequences for those who practice it. «I’ll sit and watch how girls are surrounded and forced to suffer a practice that traumatizes them for the rest of their lives.»
«Female circumcision is prohibited in Gambia from Kartong to Koina,» announced president, Yahya Jammeh. Three quarters of the country’s women have undergone genital mutilation.
