The beauty of the brain captured by a neurologist-artist

As well as being an artist, Greg Dunn has a doctorate in neuroscience and decided to capture his knowledge on canvas. The branching patterns of neurons that he observed through the microscope reminded him of the aesthetic principles in Asian art, which he had always admired. Dunn realized that neurons could be painted in the style of sumi-e, which involves making as few brush strokes as possible to capture the soul of the subject.

The brain has been called the most complex structure in the universe, but it might also be the most beautiful. Artist Greg Dunn’s work captures both the aesthetics and sophistication of this enigmatic organ.
