Buffaloes shake the ground of Sumbawa during the 'Barapan Kebo'
Each year in this town west of the Lesser Sunda Islands, before the planting season, hundreds of riders fight to skillfully control their buffalo to reach the end of race and do it before the rest. It is quite an event that brings together hundreds of peasants from the surrounding areas.
Around 250 pairs of water buffaloes participate in the traditional ‘Barapan Kebo’ buffalo race at the island of Sumbawa. The coveted first place in this competition is awarded with a pilgrimage to Mecca .
