Russia cuts gas supply to Ukraine

Gazprom’s chairman has told the Russian press, » supplies will be stopped until the Ukrainian company makes further payments.» In this sense, the CEO of Gazprom warned that the waiver to continue buying Russian gas poses a serious threat to a safe transit of supplies to Europe, since about 15% of the gas used in Europe travels through Ukraine. Cutting gas is added to the power outage suffered by the citizens of Crimea, the Ukrainian region that was annexed by Russia, after two transmission towers in southern Ukraine were damaged by explosions.

Russian gas company, Gazprom, decided to cut gas supplies to Ukraine until the Ukrainian state company, Naftogaz, pays the bills they owe. The disruption comes at a time when the country is hit by freezing temperatures.
